Chelsea's dominance in English football since Roman Abramovich took over in 2004 has been quite impressive. Despite arguably dropping off in the last couple of years, the Blues have still won 17 major trophies in just under 15 years. Much of their success came while club legend John Terry was captain of the team between 2004 and 2017. The Englishman led Chelsea to five Premier League titles, four FA Cups and of course, the coveted Champions League in 2012 that Abramovich had been chasing for almost a decade. Not bad at all. In more recent seasons though, since Terry's departure, the players in the Chelsea dressing room have been criticised for showing a lack of mentality. THE WRONG MENTALITY Many pundits and fans have put the club's struggles down to players downing tools and giving up when the going gets tough. It's a fair point to make, considering Chelsea's current crop do have the talent to be challenging for another league title - but it hasn't happened so far under Maurizio Sarri. Perhaps then, standards in the dressing room are slipping - and that certainly wouldn't have happened when Terry was still around - as his former teammate John Obi Mikel has revealed. The midfielder, who spent 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge, has lifted the lid on what it was like in the dressing room when Chelsea were losing a game. Unsurprisingly, Terry was the player demanding improvement - and what happened when the team was underperforming sounds absolutely wild. TAKING IT TOO FAR "If we lost a game, we may not speak to each other for a day to show this was not good and tomorrow had to be better," Mikel said in an interview with The Sun. "We were just so hungry. Did we take it a bit too far? Sometimes, yes, we had to. "There were people fighting, grabbing round the neck, JT smashing the table and drinks. If we were losing a game you did not want to be in the dressing room." According to Mikel, whoever the manager was would also come in and say his piece - but then leave the players in the hands of Terry again after. A FIGUREHEAD "The manager would speak and then leave it to JT to carry on. He smashes the whole place up and then we go back out and get the win," Mikel continued. "What he said, we followed. What he did, we followed. We looked at him for a reaction and we followed. "No matter what manager came in, you had to know the figurehead of the club was John Terry." Evidently, Terry was the man that made Chelsea tick on the pitch and even behind closed doors. Right now, it seems the club are missing a player like him in their dressing room.

Chelsea are currently in fourth place in the Premier League, but there is still plenty of football to be played before the end of the season. But it is far from over when it comes to the battle to get back into the Champions League, with one third of the Premier League still to go And Chelsea's remaining fixtures hint that it is far from a certainty that the Blues will finish in the top four. Chelsea still have to play against Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United before the end of the season, with the first of those games coming this weekend against Pep Guardiola's City side at the Etihad Stadium. Of course, there are no guarantees that Arsenal will win the other 11 remaining games, but their record against teams outside of the top six is good, and if they can replicate that in the closing stages of the season, they will force Chelsea or United to get results off of their rivals to finish above them. Chelsea would also need to avoid any further defeats such as the 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth last week, although they are facing the possibility of fixture congestion in the coming weeks and months ahead, still being involved in four competitions. The Blues face Swedish side Malmo in the Europa League, with the two legs of the round of 32 tie falling either side of their clash with United in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday, February 18. Maurizio Sarri's men will also face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, February 24. As a result of reaching the final, Chelsea's home game with Brighton & Hove Albion will need to be rearranged, and their trip to Goodison Park to face Everton next month could also be rearranged, should the Blues progress in the FA Cup. Chelsea are looking to maintain their place in the Champions League places when they host Leicester City in the Premier League this afternoon at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri insists it is more important for him to win matches than bringing through youth players at the club. Some Blues supporters have become frustrated by the lack of opportunities for players such as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ethan Ampadu, while Andreas Christensen has been on the periphery of the squad. The Dane was the starting centre-back during Antonio Conte’s second season, however has made only one Premier League start for the Blues this season with Sarri at the helm. Meanwhile, Ampadu has featured in just one Europa League game to date, and Hudson-Odoi came on as a substitute in the league victory at Stamford Bridge last week. The 18-year-old was then substituted himself due to injury, however Chelsea fans in the away end at Vicarage Road were unaware of that and roundly booed the decision to bring him off. Chelsea have one of the best academy’s in Europe, while they currently have 39 players out on loan, many of whom have come through the system. But Sarri insists fans have to be patient with the chances that the youth players will have and that it is more important for him to get results on the pitch. “He was injured, so I don’t know what to say about the booing], but I can understand that a fan loves young players from the academy, I can understand very well, but in the long run I have to win matches, and the fans I think want me to win matches,” Sarri said. “Yes, I think so [important to bring youth players through] but it’s not easy. It’s not easy at this level to take the young players from the academy and he’s ready to play, not only here, everywhere in Europe. “Sometimes there is one, two young players in Barcelona, from the academy, sometimes one, two Real Madrid, zero in Juventus, zero in Paris Saint-Germain. It’s not easy, and I think that we are lucky because we have Ampadu, we have Christensen, we have Odoi, so we are lucky. “Take for players in the academy, we are really very lucky, or the academy is very good. “In Europe, there are few players, 18 [year old] players, with eight matches at this level, so Odoi I think in this season played six, seven official matches in Europe, so I think that he has to be lucky. Joining AC Milan on a season-long loan from Chelsea back in August, the midfielder endured a nightmare start to his career in Serie A. Highly criticised for his role in his new side's 3-2 defeat against Napoli after coming off the substitutes' bench back in August, the Frenchman spent the first couple of months watching on from the sidelines. However, injuries in the middle of the park presented the 24-year-old with an opportunity and he has grasped it with both hands. Now a key player for the Rossoneri after a difficult start for Gennaro Gattuso's team, Bakayoko hit the headlines on Tuesday evening after helping Milan advance to the Coppa Italia semi-finals after beating Napoli 2-0 at the San Siro. Speaking after the game, the manager hailed the ex-Monaco man and outlined how the player has improved drastically over the past few months. "I think he's an atypical deep-lying midfielder in modern football," he told Rai Sport (via Football Italia ). The January transfer window is well behind Chelsea, however the Blues are about to enter the most difficult period of their season and one that is set to define Maurizio Sarri's first year in charge. The two sides met at Wembley to contest the Carabao Cup and it took a penalty shootout to separate them. After 120 minutes of football, the score remained 0-0 but it was Pep Guardiola's City who eventually lifted the trophy after a 4-3 shootout win. Jorginho saw his spot-kick saved by Ederson and David Luiz also hit the post for the Blues. Man City were more composed, missing just once through Leroy Sane before Raheem Sterling fired the decisive penalty past Kepa Arrizabalaga. Maurizio Sarri's season of struggle at Chelsea Ian Wright claims Chelsea are in 'disarray' Chelsea fine Kepa after Carabao Cup final The cup final was Chelsea's fourth defeat at Wembley this season - they've already been beaten in the Community Shield by Guardiola's side and twice by Tottenham. This latest loss will have a rather odd impact on the Blues, should they return to the home of English football again under Sarri. That's because their coach has a number of superstitions and some were even on show last weekend. Ahead of the cup final at Wembley, Chelsea abandoned their usually luxurious pre-match accommodation, under the instruction of Sarri. According to the Daily Mail, the Blues stayed at a functional business hotel on the A40 nearby the Park Royal industrial estate, close to the Hanger Lane gyratory. That's because the boss doesn't like to return to hotels if his team has lost after staying there. Therefore, a pre-match meet at the 5-star Landmark Hotel in Marylebone, where the Blues have often stayed ahead of Wembley finals, was ruled out. According to the same report, the club insists there were no complaints from players or staff, but it's still rather bizarre nonetheless. And changing hotel wasn't the only extreme superstition Sarri adhered to on Sunday. Ahead of extra-time, the coach refused to cross the touchline and step onto the Wembley turf to deliver a team talk to his players. Instead, they formed a circle near the edge of the pitch and Sarri joined but delivered his message from his side of the touchline. Even when he was arguing with Kepa moments before the shootout, he still refused to step near the pitch! Clearly, he's a fiercely superstitious person and it's unlikely losing to City in the Carabao Cup final will change that.

And a permanent deal at the end of the loan could be worth more than £54million. Express Sport understands Juventus have rejected an initial six-month loan deal for the Argentine striker. Higuain is currently on loan at AC Milan but wants to join his former coach Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea. Juventus want to sell Higuain outright for £36m. But Chelsea have proposed a long-term loan, with them taking over the remaining six months of Milan’s lease on the player. They then want to take the Argentine on loan for next season as well for an £18m fee, followed by a permanent deal in the summer of 2020. Juventus are reluctant to go for another loan move but could be persuaded with clauses for the deal to be made permanent if Chelsea finish in the top four or win the Europa League. Chelsea are also in advanced talks with Zenit St Petersburg over a £31m deal for Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes. Higuain’s arrival, meanwhile, would likely spell the end of Alvaro Morata’s spell at Chelsea. The striker is wanted at Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. Morata could head back to Spain after a disappointing 18 months at Chelsea in which he has failed to cement his spot as their regular centre-forward. The ex-Real Madrid striker cost £60m in the summer of 2017 and was earmarked as the replacement Chelsea needed for the departing Diego Costa. But Morata - and fellow striker Olivier Giroud - has laboured for form and goals at Stamford Bridge.
